Sumitomo Corporation's well-designed LED signboard

Sumitomo Corporation is expanding sales of light-emitting diode (LED) signboards with built-in solar panels that offer superior design. The company has started to make full-scale proposals for use in disaster prevention, such as evacuation guidance signs, as well as for traffic and transportation applications, advertising, commercial facilities, and temporary fencing at construction sites. Prices start from the 100,000 yen range, and the products will be marketed widely, including overseas. The company aims to sell 2,000 units in the next two years. The battery used is a rechargeable nickel-hydrogen AA storage battery. The company hopes to develop new applications by combining it with sensors, cameras, Wi-Fi, and other devices. Daiichikin (Tsuzuki-ku, Yokohama) has developed a new model "LSE (Label Separator)" in its "Bottle Friend" series of devices that automatically remove labels from PET bottles. Unlike conventional models, it can remove labels without crushing the bottles. The price is about 2.5 million yen (excluding consumption tax). It will be marketed to PET bottle collectors and businesses that recycle and use bottles as materials. The sales target is yet to be determined. Delivery time after receiving an order is two to three months. The company has already started receiving orders and is making proposals to its customers. The device consists of a cylindrical "outer cylinder" and a rotating octagonal "inner cylinder" inside the outer cylinder. 180,000 faulty fire-alarm devices being recalled

TOKYO, Japan - A faulty battery-operated fire-alarm device sold by Max Co. is being recalled as the battery system has a much shorter life than advertised, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said Nov. 8. The agency said a total of 180,000 fire-alarm devices in four models sold by the Tokyo-based Max and the Fukuoka-based company Ochi Sangyo are being recalled. The four models affected are KK-DS40-10 (photo), KK-DS40-2, KK-DH40-10, KK-DH40-2 sold by Max, and OK-DS01-10 sold by Ochi Sangyo. For inquiries, call 0120-301-359. According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, the batteries in two of the faulty fire-alarms went dead in about two months, instead of 10 years and two years as advertised. (Kyodo)
